Executive Management
Chief Executive Officer: Daryl H. Faulds, Ph.D.
Dr. Faulds has over 20 years of experience in molecular biology, immunology and pharmaceutical development. Most recently he led the Berlex Biosciences (the US subsidiary of Schering AG) project team for Influenza A therapeutics. He has led projects in respiratory disease (Mycoplasma pneumonia), autoimmune disease (Multiple sclerosis, MS) and basic research. In addition he has served on international project teams for HPV vaccines and bioinformatics. This background has given him extensive experience in pre-clinical project management and management of the transition from research to the clinic.
Dr. Faulds earned his BA in biology at Revelle College, University of California, San Diego and his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at the Institute of Molecular Biology, University of Oregon. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Faulds was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, Berkeley.
President: William J. Guilford, Ph.D.
Dr. Guilford has over 20 years of experience in biotechnology and pharmaceutical research and development. Dr. Guilford leads the medicinal chemistry effort and manages research collaborations. In previous positions at Berlex Biosciences (the US subsidiary of Schering AG), ImmuLogic and Sogetal, Dr. Guilford gained extensive experience in medicinal chemistry in both the cardiovascular and immunology therapeutic areas. Three of his four drug candidates have entered into clinical trial. Dr. Guilford is an author on over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and is an inventor on over 30 issued patents and patent applications.
Dr. Guilford earned his BS in chemistry at University of California, Berkeley and his Ph.D. in Chemistry at University of Illinois at Urbana / Champaign. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Guilford was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) postdoctoral fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH-Z) and a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University.
Senior Vice President Finance: William K. Holstein
Mr. Holstein has 17 years investment management experience ranging from real estate development, both in the United States and Mexico, to technology and biotechnology. As manager of a private investment portfolio in the San Francisco Bay area, Mr. Holstein has a wide range of experience and often takes an active role in assisting the portfolio companies. In addition to his management role at Gemmus Pharma he is a minority shareholder in the company. Mr. Holstein earned his BA in Economics at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Vice President Business Development: Agustin de la Calle, Ph.D.
Dr. de la Calle has over 12 years of a professional proven success record, negotiated over 15 deals of a wide range of types and has hands-on expertise in working internationally in strategic business roles in the areas of platform technologies, therapeutics, and diagnostics. Most recently he served as Vice President of corporate and business development at The NDA Group, the leading development company that worked on over one third of approved products in Europe in 2009. In a prior role, he was head of business development at Innate Pharma, S.A. in France, where he lead the negotiating team and moved forward the closing of alliances and licenses that proved to be of strategic importance for the success of the company’s IPO in 2006 and additionally resulted in a commercial product launch in early 2007.
Dr. de la Calle received his M.S. from the Free University of Berlin, Germany, his Ph.D. was awarded from the Freie University of Berlin after having performed his research at Harvard Medical School. He conducted his postdoctoral and business studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
